Government of Zambia Launches Delayed Debut Campaign

The First Lady of Zambia, Maureen Mwanawasa, and U.S. Ambassador to Zambia, Carmen Martinez, launched the government of Zambia’s “Real Man, Real Woman” HIV/AIDS prevention campaign on May 11, 2007. The "Real Man, Real Woman" campaign is based on AIDSMarks’ regional Delayed Debut mass media campaign, implemented in 12 other countries. PSI's Zambian affiliate, the Society for Family Health (SFH), worked with the government and the National AIDS Council to launch this campaign.

During the launch at Chawama Basic School in Lusaka, the First Lady and Ambassador Martinez called on Zambian youth to resist sexual coercion and encouraged parents to talk about the topic with their children. The May issue of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) newsletter features the abstinence campaign on its cover, with a photo of the U.S. ambassador and the Zambian first lady at the launch event for the campaign. Check it out here.
